About Us

Our Mission

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living, and advocacy.

Who We Are

The Foundation was founded in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1964 when a group of twelve highly motivated volunteers recruited canvassers to complete a residential campaign that raised $15,000. Over the years the organization continued to grow and develop into the strong entity it is today.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation raises funds to support research and health promotion programs.  We believe we can help more people by investing in research and education to prevent heart disease and stroke and to develop better treatments for the diseases.

Since achieving full foundation status in 1989, the Foundation has contributed over $1,000,000 to research in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Also, $2,000,000 has been allocated to funding public and professional education programs.

The work of the Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors and carried out by highly qualified staff.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is a member of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, a federation of ten independent provincial foundations and one national foundation.
